The Miskin Arms is an attractive Vale of Glamorgan pub offering meals in a relaxing and traditional environment.

The Venue
Situated in the in the pleasant village of Miskin in the Vale of Glamorgan, the Miskin Arms is roughly 12 miles west of Cardiff, and just a couple of minutes off Junction 34 of the M4. The pub is located less than a mile from Pontyclun, and sits opposite the village war memorial.

A large, old building, with a cream and green exterior, the Miskin Arms offers extensive parking to the rear, as well as an attractive beer garden. A heated balcony area also offers seating. The location is quiet, and trees and shrubbery abound, offering a relaxing setting.

A large, traditional wooden door, complete with iron latch, marks the entrance to the spacious bar area. The interior is very much that of a rustic pub, complete with tapestry curtains, brass fittings, decorative mirrors, and framed cigarette card collections. Dark wood chairs with red or green felt cushioning provide seating around some 15 well-spaced tables. The room is bright and well-lit, with large windows providing plenty of natural light, while plants decorate windowsills.

Although food is served in the bar area, the Miskin Arms also has a separate restaurant, Mayfields, seating 30 people.

The People
Very much a country pub, the Miskin Arms offers a certain rustic charm. Its customers come primarily from the local area and include farming types as well as local residents of all ages. Children are also welcome. The atmosphere is laid back, and visitors chat away happily while modern music plays in the background and the friendly and hard working staff go about their duties.

The Food
In the main, the Miskin Arms offers standard pub fare. The lunchtime menu, available between midday and 5pm, largely comprises of jacket potatoes and wholemeal sandwiches. A jacket with cheese and spring onion and a salad garnish and chips is available for a pretty steep £6.95.

The full menu is also available between midday and 9pm most days. Starters include chicken liver and wild mushroom terrine served with mixed leaves, crusty bread and onion marmalade (£5.95).

The menu changes fairly regularly but dishes like pan fried chicken supreme, chilli con carne or scampi and chips is the sort of thing you can expect. It might not blow you away with its quality, in truth, some of it is a bit disappointing, but it serves a purpose. There are also usually three vegetarian options, which may include the sweet potato, parsnip and chestnut bake served with fresh vegetables and new potatoes (£9.95).

The dessert selection comprises of around 4-6 daily options advertised on the black board. They consist of classic puds like Spotted Dick (£4.95).

The Drink
The bar area is marked by black and white tiling and hosts a wooden bar offering the usual beers and spirits. The Miskin Arms also offers the deliciously spicy and hoppy Everards Tiger bitter (£2.70 a pint), and zesty Sunchaser Blonde beer on draught- rare sights in Wales.

The Last Word
The Miskin Arms offers a warm, cosy and friendly atmosphere, with a pleasant, rural beer garden to relax in during the summer months.
