The ViewCardiff Review
A friendly boozer close to the stadium, The City Arms has much to offer. The VenueMuch better looking than The Model Inn is The City Arms on the corner on Womanby Street. As you'd expect this is a match day favourite and the pavement outside was made for spilling out onto. But don't be scared by the sports lot this is a friendly place where people come to have a good time, not a fight. There's a big plasma screen but there's also a new lighting rig and spotlights to create a disco atmosphere. The present landlord took it over under a tenancy from Brain’s in 1991 and it’s made up of two distinct rooms divided by a central bar.
The right-hand bar is more subdued with its snug area and its newly upholstered orange and red coloured banquette all the way around the outside of the room. Pictures on the walls include a team photo of the 1905 Cardiff City football team. The landlord, by his own admission, has a good eye and claims to have the best looking barmaids in Cardiff.
The PeopleThere’s a good range of ages with students and a crowd in their 40s and upwards. As it's almost next door to the stadium it gets its fair share of trade when there’s something on. The door staff are polite and friendly. A former bouncer himself for some 20 years, the landlord is a real character with a dry wit and a twinkle in his eye.
The Food and DrinkThey do a limited range of food, which hasn’t gone up in price for five years, so you can still get a decent for curry and chips with naan bread for a fiver. You can't get cheaper than that.
Fosters, Guinness, Heineken, Carling, Stella, Brain’s Bitter, SA and Dark are all on draught. Prices are competitive with a pint of bitter costing £2.16. You’ve got the usual selection in bottles too.
The Last WordGet chatting to the landlord and you’ll have a good time regardless of what mood you were in before.
