The ViewCardiff Review
A traditional pub in St Mary’s Street, The Cottage is a cosy retreat from shopping and the weather. The VenueThis old boozer can be summed up in three words - friendly, traditional and cosy. When the rain won't stop, you and your friends can bunk down in one of their snug alcoves and munch your way through some pub grub.
Behind its creaky door there's what you'd expect from an old pub, lots of paintings and mirrors plus a few screens dotted around and it gets busy during match days.
The PeopleThere’s as much grey hair as gelled hair in here and, while it’s quiet in the day, there’s always some old hand propping up the bar, a small group of friends chatting in the corner or a couple canoodling. This is a place to come to relax rather than go wild and gets much of its trade from feeding and watering local workers.
The Food and DrinkBrain’s beer-battered haddock and chips is £6.25. Unfortunately, on the last visit, while the fish was as fresh as it could be and the chips good and chunky it should have been patted dry or at least the oil changed as it was acrid. All desserts are £3.95.
You can also have baguettes, jacket potatoes and more filling dishes like pork leek and Caerphilly sausages with mash and peas for £5.25 and Brains ale and onion gravy is £5.25.
On tap there’s Brain’s Bitter, SA and Dark and Stella, Carling, Guinness, Heineken and 45 and in bottles there’s Grolsch, Corona, Beck’s, Budweiser, Bulmer’s and Welsh cider Orchard Gold. Bottles of wine weigh in at around £10 to £12.
The Last WordA traditional, friendly pub, The Cottage maybe small but it can accommodate all tastes.
