Initially founded as an exclusive members-only social club by former Welsh politician Owen John Thomas, Clwb Ifor Bach first opened it’s doors to the general public during the late 1990s and has since developed a reputation as being one the best live music venues in the country.

The Venue
Located at the heart of Womanby Street, one of the oldest historic streets in the city, The Welsh Club, as it’s alternatively known, appears at first glance to be somewhat modestly unassuming. However, hidden behind the tired brick walls and blackened windows of number eleven are not one, not two, but three separate floors, each with its own unique theme and overall layout.

The upper-most, and largest of the three levels, hosts the main dance floor, bar and music stage which has recently been extended to incorporate a capacity of around two hundred and twenty punters. The second floor is kitted out with an array of comfortable sofas, tables and chairs presenting the ideal atmosphere for kicking-back and listening to the offerings from in-house and guest DJs. The ground floor has more of a classic pub feel, however, it also boasts an additional, though much smaller, dance floor and music stage.

Event listings vary considerably, so it’s always a good idea to check for booking details and prices well in advance, particularly if you're planning to attend one of the main club events. It’s also worth noting that the club can get a bit over crowded at times, purely down to its popularity, so it’s well worth getting in early to avoid queuing, especially if you’re planning a group night out.

The People
The club hosts a huge variety of events, ranging from typical clubbing nights and live performances from local bands and artists, through to well establish live acts, such as Duffy, Super Furry Animals and Bullet For My Valentine. It’s little surprise then, that the club attracts an equally diverse clientele, however, there is always a common warm and friendly atmosphere and the staff are always very polite and helpful (particularly if you make a genuine effort to order a pint or two in the native tongue).

The Drink
Bottled beers and spirits are most popular here, shots of the party-starter Sambuca are £1.50, and on some nights bottles of Fosters are just £1. The club offers everything you could reasonably expect, from non-alcoholic soft drinks through to a wide variety of beers, ales, wines, and spirits. Always check with the bar staff for special promotions and selective offers.

The Last Word
Clwb Ifor Bach’s reputation as a premier live music venue is fully deserved. With three separate floors and constantly varying entertainment, a good selection of drinks on offer and friendly and helpful staff, The Welsh Club has something to offer everyone. Highly recommended.
