Four out of Five stars
Running time: 105 mins

Hugely enjoyable, well written and frequently hilarious comedy with several brilliant gags and terrific comic performances from Fey, Poehler and a talented supporting cast.

What's it all about?
Tina Fey stars as successful single businesswoman Kate Holbrook, who put her personal life on hold in order to concentrate on her career but discovers, at age 37, that the clock is ticking and she really wants a baby. After conventional treatments fail and doctors inform her she's unlikely to conceive on her own, she decides to hire a surrogate and eventually settles on trashy, junk food-loving Angie Ostrowski (Amy Poehler).

However, Kate gets more than she bargained for when Angie dumps her equally trashy boyfriend Carl (Dax Shephard) and decides to move in with Kate for the duration of the pregnancy. Meanwhile, Kate tentatively begins a new romance with local juice bar owner Rob (Greg Kinnear), despite the fact that her Organic Market company is about to become his main competitor.

The Good
As anyone who's seen 30 Rock will attest, Tina Fey is a terrific comedienne with a hugely likeable screen presence and she's on top form here, especially when sparking off Saturday Night Live co-star Amy Poehler. There's also superb comic support from Romany Malco (as Kate's wisecracking doorman) and Dax Shephard (hilarious), as well as two inspired comic cameos from Steve Martin (funnier than he's been in years as Kate's pretentious guru boss) and Sigourney Weaver, as the ultra-fertile head of the surrogacy firm.

The sharply observed script is extremely funny, ensuring that every scene contains at least one good laugh, while also delivering an emotionally satisfying plot. There's even some pretty decent chemistry between Fey and Kinnear (who, admittedly, isn't given much to do beyond his standard Nice Guy schtick).

The Great
The film is packed with hilarious moments, but it's Poehler who ultimately steals the show – her facial expressions alone are enough to induce giggling fits.

Worth seeing?
Baby Mama is easily one of the funniest films of the year, thanks to a wonderful script, several brilliant gags and terrific comic performances. Highly recommended.
