The ViewCardiff Review
This big, modern bar is part of the Oceana complex and is a great place for a cheeky cocktail and a pre-club schmooze. The VenueMordaith, which means voyage in Welsh, is a big, 350 capacity, retro/modern, light and airy bar which is part of the Oceana complex with its five bars and two nightclubs (well, why just have one eh?). The other bars have similarly poetic names such as Parisian Boudoir, Villa Tahiti and, err, Sydney Harbourside (not sure about that one). You’ve got a rather nice decked area equipped with small electric heaters outside and a dozen or so tables under a massive dark blue awning. Inside, the bright mirrored bar is on the right and there’s a big expanse in the middle which makes it perfect for socialising.
There’s a dancefloor area at the back and an extension at the far end which is very light and airy and houses pine wood tables and sports fancy designs on the walls. Elsewhere there are big modern panels on the walls, cream pillars and cool ambient music drifts around during the day while the place is illuminated at night by red lamps and clusters of ceiling lights. DJs work the decks all week and Monday and Wednesday are student nights, Thursday is R'n'B night and it stays open till around 2am on weekends.
The PeopleOceana is a chameleon-like venue which by day is a popular place for students to grab something to eat and by night somewhere to enjoy a few drinks and go clubbing. You can do all of these without leaving the Oceana complex and Mordaith is just one part of this fun-factory.
In the evening it gets rammed, especially on student nights and at the weekend with a party and pre-club crowd. Mordaith is also popular on match days as it has massive plasma screens.
The Food and DrinkA pint of Boddington’s will set you back £2.10 and there’s also Stella, Blackthorn and Beck’s Vier and on draught and in bottles there’s Salitos, Sol, Magners, Beck’s and Brahma. A bottle of house wine is £11 or you can get a glass for £2.95. The cocktails are plentiful too and fairly sensibly priced and it’s a snip at £30 for a bottle of Moet & Chandon.
The food menu is tempting with dishes such as minted Welsh lamb steak for £7.95 and Irish mussels in cider for £7.95. You can also get a Welsh brekkie here for £6.95 which consists of laverbread, cockles, pork and leek sausages, eggs, bacon, beans and grilled tomatoes. That should keep you going.
The Last WordIf you like uptempo music and a bit of a schmooze, this is the place to be.
