The ViewCardiff Review
A classy bar with a friendly atmosphere where you can eat, drink and dance yourself into decadence and then repair yourself the next day with their chilled out weekends. The VenueThe small Fat Cat group of bars started life as a cottage industry in north Wales back in 1992 and has since spread far and wide to London, the Midlands, and north west England. This branch opened two years ago and is, in true Fat Cat style, both smart and modern while maintaining an independent feel. A massive framed mirror hangs on the wall on your right as you come and is flanked by large velvet curtains which sums up the tasteful decor.
There are squidgy brown sofas in the window area and enormous tasselled black lampshades hang over the tables in a raised section decked out with dainty cocktail tables and small bucket armchairs with stub metal legs. Walls are either exposed brickwork or covered with classic looking black, silver and red wallpaper.
Chandeliers hang from the ceiling and tasselled, red striped lampshades drop down over the bar. In between the black pillars, there’s lots of space for sitting and standing too.
The PeopleIt's quiet during the week when the business crowd come in but when the weekend rolls round DJs playing funky house take over and the place gets rammed. It stays open till 2am and if you're feeling peaky after the nights antics you can enjoy their all-day breakfasts and read the newspaper the next day. Every month they have a film night when they dim the lights and give out free popcorn. It's a stylish bar but for some reason they host a ladies night on Wednesdays.
The Food and DrinkThere are the usual range of sandwiches, burgers and salads but the chef is appears to have a bit of innovation as specials include imaginative dishes such as scallops and chorizo on pureed parsnips and pork belly with a coconut, ginger and lime risotto, and both cost £8.95.
Cocktail pitchers are £13.95. There are three house reds and whites and a tangy and fresh tasting Carolina Grecanico di Sicilia, which is a good deal at £13.45 for a bottle.
On tap here you have Foster’s, San Miguel, Strongbow, 45, Guinness and Kronenbourg and in bottles you have Budweiser, Beck’s, Peroni, Tiger and Estrella Damm.
There’s a strong selection of sprits and the cocktails are helpfully split into categories like 'fresh and fruity' and 'rich and creamy' and cost £5.95 each. 'Bubbles' include prosecco laced with blackcurrant liqueur for £7.95.
The Last WordIf you want stylish food in classy surroundings or if you fancy a dance after midnight, those Fat Cat people have got it licked.
